What is in the book?

In The Last Call, nurse, mother, and addict Gail Mitcavish recounts her plunge into alcohol and prescription addiction, the hurdles she overcame to embrace sober living, and how much her recovery mattered in the face of intense loss and grief.

Gail’s addiction takes her on what feels like an endless, treacherous path through problematic drinking and prescription pill abuse. This out-of-control cycle of jail cells, rehabilitation centers, and failed attempts at recovery took its toll on every aspect of Gail’s life, underpinning just how much healing and internal work she needed to do to pull herself out of this emotional and physical black hole.

In The Last Call, Gail takes readers through this painful process and details how she ultimately surrendered to the beauty and simplicity of sober and drug-free living - a step she couldn’t have taken without digging deep within herself to find hope. Hope that she could find the path to self-healing.

Gail won this battle just in time for more hurdles to present themselves: her mother’s death and both of her daughters receiving cancer diagnoses.

Whether readers are themselves navigating alcohol and drug recovery, ongoing addiction, loss, and grief, or the fallout of a dysfunctional family, Gail’s raw, compelling, and unapologetic storytelling demonstrates how much power we all have to overcome our internal conflicts.

About Gail Mitcavish.

Nurse and mother Gail Vruggink-Mitcavish was what she described as a “non-problem drinker.” But like we all do in life, Gail underestimated just how much control she had over this growing issue. A taste for prescription drugs, a few jail cell visits, and multiple rehabilitation facilities later, it became clear that Gail’s habits pushed the boundaries of “non-problem.”

We all have internal uphill battles we fight on a daily basis, but Gail’s truly began to derail her life. For years, she spun out of control, bouncing between legal problems to attempts at recovery to painful relapse. Her career, family life, and more were hanging on by a thread, and no matter how many support groups she attended or rehab facilities she joined, the path to self-healing seemed elusive and unattainable. She knew she had a problem but didn’t know what to do.

The hopelessness and despair Gail found herself stuck with are feelings that sometimes consume us all. Mastering your demons is much easier said than done, and many of us carry shame when we can’t overcome painful internal hurdles.

Instead of surrendering to her addiction, Gail surrendered to the beauty and simplicity of sober and drug-free living - a step she couldn’t have taken without digging deep within herself to find hope. Hope that she could find the path to self-healing.

Gail won this battle just in time for more hurdles to present themselves: her mother’s death and both of her daughters receiving cancer diagnoses.

Whether you’re battling addiction, grief, or loss, looking for answers while navigating alcohol recovery, or searching for answers to something else, Gail Mitcavish is boldly sharing her story in The Last Call to help you along your personal path of self-healing.
